Maayan of Beer Sheva shares her moving personal story which encouraged her to participate for the very first time in a marathon and in ICA's new project: "Running Together  for the Fight against Cancer", which offers participants a double experience: to run and collect donations at the same time.

It's difficult to forget the telephone call 10 years ago, informing my mother that she received an education award for serving as a leading figure and initiator of change in the education system in Beer Sheva.  I was happy for her, but I didn't quite understand.

Two years later, she received a phone call once again, informing her that she received the Israel Cancer Association's Award for Outstanding Volunteer.  I was happy for her, but I didn't quite understand.

A year later, she received a telephone call informing her that she received the Outstanding Volunteer Award of the town of Omer, in the field of education.  I was happy for her but I didn't quite understand.  Four days later, she died.

She died, and only then did I understand what a special person my mother was.

For a long time now, I have been seeking a challenge that would enable me to express the way my mother brought me up, to set goals for myself, and set my sights high, as high as possible, and to lend a hand and engage in volunteer activity for the benefit of individuals who require assistance.

So I decided - on January 9, 2015, I plan on running my very first marathon!

I am dedicating my participation in this race in memory of my Mom, and to the nationwide fight against cancer, with the aim of increasing women's awareness of the importance of getting themselves checked for early detection of breast cancer.

I decided to run a marathon and help raise funds, I would be delighted if you would click here, share the following link, and lend assistance to the best of your ability by donating to the Israel Cancer Association (ICA), and particularly, to ICA's Beer Sheva Branch, an entity which contributes a great deal to this noteworthy battle.

And even if you will be running in the Tiberias Marathon, please roll up your sleeves and upload a fundraising page like me, and we'll see who will reach the target first".
